Actos® (pioglitazone hydrochloride)

What are the risks of Actos®?

Actos® has been linked to the development of bladder cancer in humans and laboratory animals. According to one recent study, there is a 40% increased risk for bladder cancer with long-term use of Actos®. This may include patients that have taken the drug for more than two years or those who have taken larger doses consistently over time.

What is Actos®?

Actos® is a diabetes medication that is used, perhaps in combination with other therapies, to control insulin resistance. Actos® is only prescribed to patients that have been diagnosed with type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes. Actos® is sold as a white circular or round pill, and is marked with the brand name ACTOS on one side and the dosage or strength on the other.

Should I stop taking Actos®?

You should not stop a course of medical treatment without first consulting your doctor. If you have health concerns with the use of any medication, discuss your concerns with your doctor and together make the health decision that is right for you.
