The antibiotic Levaquin® has been linked to painful tendon injuries

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warns that inflammation, damage and rupture in the Achilles tendon and tendons of the rotator cuff, biceps, hands and thumb may have been caused by Levaquin®. Serious cases may require surgical repair.

Levaquin® (levofloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinones. It may be prescribed as a capsule or be given intravenously or by injection during hospitalization.

In 2008, the FDA warned that use of fluoroquinones was "associated with an increased risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture."[1] The risk of injury is increased for individuals over 60, patients who have also used corticosteroids, patients with rheumatoid arthritis and those who have undergone organ transplantation.

How can you be hurt by Levaquin®?

Tendons are fibrous tissues connecting muscle to bone. Tendon rupture or inflammation (tendonitis) may result in pain, swelling, inflammation, tightness, or limited mobility of the joints. Some people may experience a snap or pop in the joint followed by pain and difficulty moving the joint. These complications may arise while a patient is using the drug, or may begin several months after completion of the course of antibiotic.

How do I know if I have experienced a tendon injury?

Only your doctor can make that determination. If you are currently experiencing these symptoms please seek the advice of your physician.
