Prescription painkillers Darvon® and Darvocet® linked to cardiac side effects
Amid concerns about potentially fatal side effects, including heart arrhythmia, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010 ordered the widely-prescribed painkillers Darvon® and Darvocet® (propoxyphene) withdrawn from US pharmaceutical market. The FDA also asked generic manufacturers of propoxyphene-containing products to voluntarily remove their products as well.
The FDA concluded that the risks of Darvon® and Darvocet® outweigh their benefits.
In calling for withdrawal of propoxyphene-containing products, the FDA asked doctors to stop prescribing it immediately—but advised patients to continue taking propoxyphene while consulting with their doctors to arrange for other medication.
