Two aggressively marketed birth control drugs have been linked to a number of serious, adverse health problems since being approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
The YAZ/Yasmin® oral birth control pill contains a progestin hormone called drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels in the bloodstream. A 2009 report in the British Medical Journal found that medication containing drospirenone was up to two times as likely as other contraceptive medications to cause life-threatening blood clots.
NuvaRing® is a contraceptive device inserted vaginally once a month. NuvaRing® differs from other birth control methods in that it continuously releases a combination of ethinyl estradiol and a high level of etonogestrel to prevent ovulation. The progestin used in NuvaRing® has been shown to increase the risk of blood clots compared to other types of progestin found in other contraceptives. NuvaRing® may also increase the risk of developing non-cancerous liver tumors.
