YAZ/Yasmin® and NuvaRing® have been linked to pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, stroke and death
Two aggressively marketed birth control drugs have been linked to a number of serious, adverse health problems since being approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
The YAZ/Yasmin® oral birth control pill contains a progestin hormone called drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels in the bloodstream. A 2009 report in the British Medical Journal found that medication containing drospirenone was up to two times as likely as other contraceptive medications to cause life-threatening blood clots.
NuvaRing® is a contraceptive device inserted vaginally once a month. NuvaRing® differs from other birth control methods in that it continuously releases a combination of ethinyl estradiol and a high level of etonogestrel to prevent ovulation. The progestin used in NuvaRing® has been shown to increase the risk of blood clots compared to other types of progestin found in other contraceptives. NuvaRing® may also increase the risk of developing non-cancerous liver tumors.

YAZ/Yasmin® and NuvaRing® have been linked to:
- Pulmonary Embolism: Blood clots in the lung. This condition can be fatal.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis: Clots in the arms and legs. This condition can cause post-thrombotic syndrome, which can lead to repeated clotting.
- Stroke: A blockage of blood to the brain, caused by blood clots.
