What is YAZ/Yasmin?

The Yaz® birth control pill is taken orally once daily to prevent pregnancy. Yaz differs from other birth control methods in that it contains a progestin hormone called drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels in the bloodstream.

Is the risk higher for YAZ/Yasmin higher than a normal birth control pill?

Since its approval by the FDA, Yaz has been linked with a number of serious, adverse health problems.  On August 14, 2009 a report in the British Medical Journal found that birth control medication containing the synthetic hormone called drospirenone was 1.5 to 2 times as likely to cause life-threatening blood clots as other contraceptive medications.  Yaz, one such drospirenone-containing contraceptive pill, was approved for sale by the FDA in March of 2006 and has been aggressively marketed to consumers ever since.
